![]() More importantly, I think we need the relationship so we can better relate to the characters going through retrievals. Because of that, if we want really any relationship with the protagonists at all, I think it's a little too difficult to just focus on the retrievals. Miranda - I see your point with the retrieval of the week format, especially with the Cowboy Bebop point, but as you said, this is only going to be 12 episodes. That's a lot to put out there and then resolve within 12 episodes! And I don't think it's doing a good job at any of it, because it's all spread too thin. When it comes to Plastic Memories specifically, my complaint is less about structure and more about how the show continually launches a bunch of different elements at the audience - fan service, cheap comedy, a wannabe love triangle, romantic tension between Tsukasa and Isla, impending doom due to the group's relationship with the main office, Isla's aging, and.more. If you boil it down to its barebones, it's really an "adventure of the moment" sort of format, but the show keeps it from feeling that way through a focus on the characters during the story. Just look at Cowboy Bebop as we've been watching it so far. We still get some retrieval action, too!Īlaina - That's totally fair, though I think I wouldn't mind a retrieval of the week format - if done right, it wouldn't necessarily keep us from learning more about the characters and their back stories. I think it was smart for the show to embrace that angle and run with it. The protagonists Tsukasa and Isla have a really interesting relationship, especially since everyone but Tsukasa knows Isla is having android issues. I think it was appropriate that the show started with that massive punch to the gut, but I think if they just kept going back to retrieval after retrieval, the show would feel a little dull. Miranda - While I really loved the first episode, I'm glad we don't have a "retrieval of the week" format. I feel like I signed up for one show and have gotten another. ![]() Since then, we've had a good number of episodes where the focus has moved away from that, aside from one notable retrieval that led to a glimpse at the black market and opened up some of the back story. The opening episode seemed to imply that we were in for a roller coaster of emotion, where each retrieval would be brutal to watch. ![]() Alaina - Right now, I feel like the show's trying too hard to fire on multiple fronts. ![]()
